Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 lb ziti or penne pasta, uncooked
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Meat:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onion is softened.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • Transfer the meat mixture to the slow cooker. Add the marinara sauce, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (with their juice), dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
  3. Layer the Ingredients:
    • Spread a layer of the meat sauce at the bottom of the slow cooker. Add half of the uncooked pasta, then dollop half of the ricotta cheese over the pasta. Sprinkle with a third of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers, ending with the remaining meat sauce on top.
  4. Cook:
    • Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4-5 hours, or until the pasta is tender. Avoid opening the lid during cooking to ensure even heat distribution.
  5. Add Cheese:
    • About 15 minutes before serving, sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese and the grated Parmesan cheese on top. Cover and continue to cook until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped fresh basil or parsley before serving.

Enjoy this delicious Slow Cooker Baked Ziti as a comforting and easy meal that’s perfect for busy days, bringing all the flavors of a traditional baked ziti with the convenience of a slow cooker.
