Mini Calzones

Mini calzones are the perfect hand-held treat, packed with savory fillings that make them ideal for parties, appetizers, or a fun family dinner. These bite-sized versions of the classic Italian dish are typically stuffed with ingredients like pepperoni, cheese, and marinara sauce but can be easily customized with your favorite meats, veggies, or cheeses. With their golden, crispy exterior and melty filling, mini calzones are an irresistible comfort food that everyone will love. They are quick to make using store-bought pizza dough, making them a convenient and delicious option.

Ingredients:

  • 1 package store-bought pizza dough (or homemade)
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • ½ cup ricotta cheese
  • ½ cup pepperoni, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Olive oil, for brushing
  • Optional fillings: mushrooms, spinach, cooked sausage, bell peppers

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface until it’s about ¼ inch thick. Using a round cookie cutter or the rim of a glass (about 4-5 inches in diameter), cut out circles of dough.
  3. Prepare the Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the mozzarella, ricotta, chopped pepperoni, and Italian seasoning. You can also add any additional desired fillings.
  4. Assemble the Calzones: Place a small spoonful of marinara sauce in the center of each dough circle, followed by a spoonful of the cheese and pepperoni mixture. Be careful not to overfill.
  5. Seal the Calzones: Fold the dough circles in half to form a semi-circle, and press the edges together with a fork to seal them.
  6. Egg Wash & Bake: Brush the tops of the mini calzones with the beaten egg to give them a golden shine, and optionally, brush with a little olive oil for extra crispiness. Transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the calzones are golden brown and puffed up.
  8. Serve: Let the calzones cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve with extra marinara sauce for dipping.

Enjoy your delicious mini calzones as a snack, appetizer, or even a light meal!
