Krautburger

Krautburgers, also known as Runzas or Bierocks, are a delicious fusion of savory beef, tangy sauerkraut, and tender dough, baked to golden perfection. This hearty dish, with its origins in Eastern European and German cuisine, is a comforting and satisfying meal that’s perfect for lunch, dinner, or even a snack. The combination of juicy ground beef, softened onions, and flavorful sauerkraut encased in a soft bread roll makes these Krautburgers irresistible. They are easy to make in batches, making them ideal for feeding a crowd or preparing ahead of time for a quick meal on busy days.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups sauerkraut, drained
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 lb bread dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Filling: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onions are softened, about 7-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add Sauerkraut and Seasoning: Stir in the drained sauerkraut, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce if using. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.
  3. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Assemble the Krautburgers: Divide the bread dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a circle about 6 inches in diameter. Place a generous scoop of the beef and sauerkraut filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling, pinching the edges together to seal, and place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Bake: Brush the tops of the Krautburgers with the beaten egg to give them a shiny, golden finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Serve: Let the Krautburgers cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm on their own or with a side of mustard or pickles for added flavor. These make a perfect meal on the go or a satisfying dinner at home!
