German Pork Chops

German Pork Chops are a delicious and comforting dish that combines the rich flavors of pork with a tangy and slightly sweet sauerkraut base. This recipe brings together tender, pan-seared pork chops with a mixture of sauerkraut, apples, onions, and a hint of caraway seeds, creating a hearty meal that’s perfect for a cozy dinner. The combination of savory and sweet flavors, along with the tender, juicy pork, makes this dish a family favorite. Serve it with mashed potatoes or a side of spaetzle for a truly authentic German experience.

Ingredients:

  • 4 bone-in pork chops
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1 can (14 oz) sauerkraut, drained
  • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup apple cider or apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Pork Chops: Season the pork chops with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the pork chops and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown. Remove the pork chops from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Cook the Onions and Apples: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and apples. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the onions are soft and translucent.
  3. Add the Sauerkraut Mixture: Add the sauerkraut, caraway seeds (if using), chicken broth, apple cider or apple juice, brown sugar, and Dijon mustard to the skillet. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
  4. Combine and Simmer: Return the pork chops to the skillet, nestling them into the sauerkraut mixture. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the pork chops are cooked through and tender. Stir occasionally to ensure the flavors meld together.
  5. Serve: Once done, serve the German Pork Chops hot with the sauerkraut mixture spooned over the top. Enjoy with a side of mashed potatoes, spaetzle, or crusty bread.

This recipe is a great way to enjoy the comforting flavors of German cuisine right at home!
