  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

For the cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk chocolate)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan and set it aside.
  2. Make the crumb topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in the melted butter until the mixture forms clumps. Set aside.
  3. Make the cake batter: In another medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Mix in the sour cream until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Assemble the cake: Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the batter.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 15 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Serve and enjoy! This cake pairs wonderfully with a hot cup of coffee or tea.
