Chili Crunch Tofu

Chili Crunch Tofu is a deliciously spicy and crunchy dish that elevates tofu to a new level of flavor and texture. The tofu is marinated and then baked or pan-fried to perfection, creating a crispy exterior that contrasts beautifully with its soft interior. It’s then tossed in a bold chili crunch sauce, made with chili oil, garlic, and crispy bits that add an irresistible heat and crunch. This dish is perfect for anyone who loves a bit of spice and is looking for a protein-packed, plant-based meal. Serve it over rice, noodles, or in a salad for a satisfying and flavorful experience.

Ingredients:

For the Tofu:

  • 1 block (14 oz) firm or extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil (for frying, if pan-frying)

For the Chili Crunch Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup chili oil with crispy bits (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the tofu: After pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture, cut it into bite-sized cubes. In a large bowl, toss the tofu cubes with soy sauce and rice vinegar, then sprinkle with cornstarch, tossing to coat evenly.
  2. Cook the tofu:
    • For baking: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the tofu cubes on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, turning halfway through, until the tofu is golden and crispy.
    • For pan-frying: Heat the sesame oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes in a single layer and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until crispy and golden.
  3. Make the chili crunch sauce: In a small bowl, combine the chili oil with crispy bits, minced garlic, soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey or maple syrup (if using), and sesame oil. Stir well to combine.
  4. Toss the tofu: Once the tofu is cooked, place it in a large mixing bowl. Pour the chili crunch sauce over the tofu and toss gently to coat each piece evenly.
  5. Serve: Garnish the Chili Crunch Tofu with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot over steamed rice, noodles, or your favorite vegetables.
  6. Enjoy: Savor the spicy, crunchy, and flavorful Chili Crunch Tofu as a satisfying plant-based dish that’s perfect for any meal.
