Whether served alongside fried chicken, pork chops, or just on its own, this dish is sure to become a favorite in your kitchen.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large head of cabbage, chopped
  • 6 slices of bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Bacon: In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until it is crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set it aside on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Leave the bacon drippings in the skillet.
  2. Sauté the Onions and Garlic: Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the bacon drippings. Sauté for about 5 minutes, until the onions are soft and translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Add the Cabbage: Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir well to coat the cabbage in the bacon drippings and sautéed onions.
  4. Season the Cabbage: Sprinkle the sugar, salt, black pepper, paprika, and crushed red pepper flakes over the cabbage. Stir to combine.
  5. Cook the Cabbage: Cook the cabbage over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.
  6. Finish with Vinegar and Bacon: Drizzle the apple cider vinegar over the cabbage and stir to combine. Add the cooked bacon back to the skillet and stir everything together.
  7. Serve: Serve the Southern Fried Cabbage hot, either as a side dish or a main course. Enjoy!

This dish pairs wonderfully with cornbread or a simple Southern-style protein like fried chicken or pork chops.
