Michigan Hot Dog

The Michigan Hot Dog is a classic American favorite, particularly popular in the northern parts of New York, despite its name suggesting otherwise. This regional delight consists of a steamed or grilled hot dog topped with a meaty, savory sauce, often mistaken for a chili but with its unique flavor profile. The sauce is the star of the dish, blending ground beef, tomato sauce, and a mix of spices to create a hearty topping that perfectly complements the juicy hot dog. Traditionally served in a steamed bun and often enjoyed with a side of fries, the Michigan Hot Dog is comfort food at its finest.

Ingredients:

  • 4 beef hot dogs
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Sauce:
    • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
    • Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, salt, and pepper.
    • Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  2. Cook the Hot Dogs:
    • While the sauce simmers, cook the hot dogs by grilling or steaming them to your preferred level of doneness.
  3. Assemble the Michigan Hot Dogs:
    • Place the hot dogs in the steamed buns.
    • Generously spoon the meat sauce over each hot dog.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve immediately, optionally with a side of fries or your favorite toppings like diced onions or shredded cheese. Enjoy!
