Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend for best results)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • Optional toppings: pickles, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, cheese

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Patties:
    • Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and gently shape them into patties, being careful not to overwork the meat.
    • Season both sides of each patty generously with salt and black pepper.
    • Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent them from puffing up during cooking.
  2. Cook the Onions:
    • In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the Burgers:
    • In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat.
    • Add the burger patties to the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
    • During the last minute of cooking, place a pat of butter (about 1/2 tablespoon) on top of each patty to melt.
  4. Toast the Buns:
    • While the burgers are cooking, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter in another skillet or on a griddle.
    • Split the hamburger buns and place them cut side down in the skillet, toasting them until they are golden brown.
  5. Assemble the Burgers:
    • Place a burger patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun.
    • Top with caramelized onions and any additional toppings of your choice.
    • Finish with the top half of the bun.

Enjoy your delicious Wisconsin Butter Burgers, a rich and flavorful twist on the classic burger that celebrates the love of butter and beef!
