Ingredients:

For the Meatballs:

  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp butter, for frying

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meatballs:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and pork. Add the finely chopped onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix everything together until well combined.
    • Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
    • In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, frying them until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Sprinkle the flour into the melted butter, stirring constantly, and cook for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture is golden brown.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer, allowing it to thicken slightly.
    • Stir in the heavy cream, soy sauce, and Dijon mustard. Continue to cook, stirring, until the gravy is smooth and has thickened to your desired consistency.
    • If using, stir in the sour cream for extra richness.
  3. Combine and Serve:
    • Return the meatballs to the skillet, tossing them in the gravy until well coated.
    • Simmer for a few minutes to ensure the meatballs are heated through.
    • Serve the meatballs with the gravy over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or your favorite side dish.

Enjoy this simple yet comforting dish that brings the taste of Sweden to your table!
