Round Steak Italiano

Round Steak Italiano is a comforting and hearty dish that brings together the robust flavors of Italian cuisine with a tender, slow-cooked round steak. This dish features a tomato-based sauce infused with garlic, onions, herbs, and a touch of red wine, which slowly simmers with the steak until it becomes melt-in-your-mouth tender. It’s a simple yet satisfying meal, perfect for cozy family dinners or as a special dish for guests. Serve it over pasta, rice, or with a side of crusty bread to soak up the rich sauce.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs round steak, cut into serving-size pieces
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Season the round steak pieces with salt and pepper, then brown them on both sides in the skillet. Remove and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and garlic, sautéing until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, red wine (if using), oregano, basil, and crushed red pepper flakes. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
  4. Return the browned steak to the skillet, nestling it into the sauce. Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to low.
  5. Simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the steak is tender and the flavors have melded together. Stir occasionally and add a bit of water if the sauce becomes too thick.
  6. Before serving, sprinkle the dish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley.

Serve this Round Steak Italiano with your favorite pasta or a side of vegetables. The rich, flavorful sauce and tender steak will make it a new favorite in your recipe rotation.
