PATTY MELT

A Patty Melt is a classic American sandwich that combines the best of a hamburger and a grilled cheese sandwich. This comforting dish features a juicy beef patty topped with caramelized onions and melted Swiss cheese, all nestled between slices of buttery, toasted rye bread. The combination of savory beef, sweet onions, and gooey cheese creates a delicious harmony of flavors and textures. Easy to make and incredibly satisfying, a Patty Melt is perfect for lunch or dinner, offering a nostalgic taste of diner-style comfort food. Serve it with crispy fries or a simple salad for a complete and hearty meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown and caramelized. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Beef Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into thin patties that are slightly larger than the bread slices, as they will shrink during cooking.
  3. Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side or until they are browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of four slices, layer one slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and then top with another slice of bread, buttered side up.
  5. Grill the Sandwiches: In the skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  6. Serve: Remove the Patty Melts from the skillet, slice them in half, and serve hot. Optionally, spread a little mayonnaise on the inside of the bread for extra creaminess before assembling.

Enjoy the delicious blend of flavors in a Patty Melt, a classic sandwich that’s sure to satisfy your cravings for a hearty and comforting meal.
