Mashed Potato au Gratin

Mashed Potato au Gratin is a delightful twist on the classic French dish. Combining the creamy texture of mashed potatoes with the rich, cheesy goodness of au gratin, this dish is perfect for special occasions or as a comforting side to your favorite meals. The golden, crispy top layer of cheese adds a wonderful contrast to the smooth, buttery potatoes beneath, making each bite a blend of flavors and textures. This recipe is simple enough for a weeknight dinner but impressive enough to serve at a holiday gathering.

Ingredients:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes:
    • Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook until the potatoes are tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
  2. Mash the Potatoes:
    • Add the butter, milk, and heavy cream to the potatoes. Mash until smooth and creamy. Stir in 1 cup of the shredded Gruyère cheese, garlic, nutmeg (if using), and salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Assemble the Dish:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Transfer the mashed potatoes to a buttered baking dish, spreading them evenly.
    • Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of Gruyère cheese and the Parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the mashed potatoes.
    • Sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly over the cheese layer.
  4. Bake:
    • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  5. Serve:
    • Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.

Enjoy your Mashed Potato au Gratin as a luxurious and satisfying side dish that pairs well with roasted meats, vegetables, or a fresh salad.
