Idaho-Style Finger Steaks

Idaho-Style Finger Steaks are a classic regional dish that’s both simple and delicious. These crispy, golden-fried steak strips are a perfect combination of tender beef and crunchy coating, making them a hit at any gathering. Originating in Idaho, this dish is often served with dipping sauces like ranch or cocktail sauce, along with fries or onion rings. Ideal for a casual dinner or party, these finger steaks are easy to make and incredibly satisfying with their hearty texture and bold flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb sirloin or cube steak, cut into thin strips
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the steak: Cut the steak into thin, bite-sized strips. Season generously with salt and pepper, then set aside.
  2. Set up the dredging station: In one shallow bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. In another shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  3. Coat the steak strips: Dip each steak strip into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge it in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat each piece evenly. Repeat this step for extra crunch by dipping and dredging a second time if desired.
  4. Heat the oil: Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a large skillet or deep fryer. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the finger steaks: Working in batches, fry the coated steak strips for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  6. Drain and serve: Remove the finger steaks from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces, like ranch or cocktail sauce.

Enjoy these crispy, tender Idaho-Style Finger Steaks with friends and family!
