The combination of sharp cheddar, creamy Gruyère, and a hint of Dijon mustard gives it a depth of flavor that’s both nostalgic and sophisticated. Best of all, it’s easy to make and sure to please everyone at the table.
Ingredients:
- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (optional, for topping)
Instructions:
- Cook the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Make the Cheese Sauce: In the same pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk constantly for about 2 minutes to create a roux. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking continuously until the mixture is smooth and begins to thicken, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the Cheese: Reduce the heat to low and stir in the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Gradually add the shredded cheddar and Gruyère cheeses, stirring until melted and smooth.
- Combine with Pasta: Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring to coat the pasta evenly.
- Optional Topping: If you prefer a baked version, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish. In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with the melted butter and Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the top of the mac and cheese.
- Bake (Optional): Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and crispy.
- Serve: Serve the mac and cheese hot, garnished with a sprinkle of extra cheese or chopped parsley if desired.
Enjoy your creamy, homemade mac and cheese!
