Grinder Sandwich

Grinder Sandwich is a hearty, flavor-packed sub sandwich, traditionally loaded with deli meats, cheese, and a variety of fresh toppings. Originating from New England, this sandwich is known for its crispy, toasted roll that’s filled with layers of savory meats like salami, ham, and turkey, combined with crunchy veggies, melted cheese, and a tangy dressing. Whether enjoyed hot or cold, the Grinder is a satisfying meal perfect for lunch or dinner, and it’s highly customizable to suit your taste preferences.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large hoagie or sub roll
  • 4-6 slices deli meats (salami, ham, turkey, or your choice)
  • 2 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 1/4 cup sliced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup sliced pickles or banana peppers
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Italian dressing or oil and vinegar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil, for brushing

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the bread: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice the hoagie roll in half lengthwise, being careful not to cut all the way through. Open the roll and brush the inside lightly with olive oil.
  2. Toast the bread: Place the hoagie roll on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the edges are golden and crispy.
  3. Assemble the sandwich: Spread the mayonnaise (and mustard, if using) evenly on both sides of the toasted roll. Layer the deli meats on the bottom half of the roll, followed by the cheese slices.
  4. Melt the cheese (optional): If you prefer a hot sandwich, place the assembled sandwich back in the oven for another 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese melts.
  5. Add the toppings: Remove the sandwich from the oven and layer the shredded lettuce, sliced red onions, tomatoes, pickles (or banana peppers), and any additional toppings you prefer.
  6. Dress the sandwich: Drizzle the Italian dressing or a combination of oil and vinegar over the toppings, and season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  7. Serve: Close the sandwich, slice in half, and serve immediately.

Enjoy your Grinder Sandwich, whether toasted or cold, for a satisfying and customizable meal packed with flavors and textures!
