Ingredients:

  • For the Chili:
    • 1 lb ground beef
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1 teaspoon chili powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
    • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
    • 1 cup beef broth
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Hot Dogs:
    • 8 all-beef hot dogs
    • 8 hot dog buns, steamed or warmed
    • Yellow mustard, for serving
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chili:
    • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, until fragrant.
    • Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes.
    • Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, ground mustard, and cayenne pepper (if using). Cook for 2-3 minutes until the spices are well combined.
    • Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let the chili cook, uncovered, for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt and pepper to taste.
    • If the chili becomes too thick, you can add a little more broth or water to reach your desired consistency.
  2. Cook the Hot Dogs:
    • While the chili is simmering, cook the hot dogs according to your preference—grill, boil, or steam them until heated through.
  3. Assemble the Coney Dogs:
    • Place a hot dog in each steamed or warmed bun.
    • Generously spoon the chili over each hot dog.
    • Drizzle with yellow mustard and top with finely chopped onions.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve immediately while the hot dogs are hot, with extra napkins on the side!

Enjoy your Detroit-Style Coney Dogs with a side of fries or potato chips for a truly authentic experience.
