Deep Fried Cheese Curds

Deep fried cheese curds are a beloved comfort food, particularly popular in the Midwest. These crispy, golden bites of melted cheese offer a delightful contrast between the crunchy exterior and the gooey, stretchy cheese inside. Perfect as an appetizer or a snack, they are incredibly easy to make at home. Whether enjoyed on their own or dipped in your favorite sauce, deep fried cheese curds are sure to be a hit with anyone who tries them.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fresh cheese curds
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)
  • Optional: Ranch or marinara sauce for dipping

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Oil: In a deep fryer or a large heavy-bottomed pot, heat oil to 375°F (190°C). Make sure there is enough oil to fully submerge the cheese curds, about 2-3 inches deep.
  2. Prepare the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. In a separate small bowl, whisk the egg and buttermilk together. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until you have a smooth batter.
  3. Coat the Cheese Curds: Working in small batches, dip the cheese curds into the batter, making sure they are fully coated. Let any excess batter drip off before carefully placing them into the hot oil.
  4. Fry the Cheese Curds: Fry the cheese curds in the hot oil for about 1-2 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  5. Serve: Serve the deep fried cheese curds hot, with your favorite dipping sauce on the side.

Enjoy these delicious deep fried cheese curds as a snack, appetizer, or a fun addition to any meal!
