Cuban Roasted Pork Sandwiches

Cuban Roasted Pork Sandwiches, also known as “Cubanos,” are a delicious combination of savory flavors and textures that embody the spirit of Cuban cuisine. These sandwiches are made with tender, marinated roasted pork, layered with ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all pressed together in a crispy Cuban roll. The secret to the perfect Cubano lies in the slow-roasted pork, marinated in a blend of citrus, garlic, and spices, which infuses every bite with a burst of flavor. Perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner, these sandwiches are a true taste of Cuba.

Ingredients:

For the roasted pork:

  • 2 lbs pork shoulder or pork butt
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

For the sandwiches:

  • 4 Cuban rolls or sub rolls
  • 8 slices ham
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • Dill pickles, sliced
  • Yellow mustard
  • Butter, for grilling

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Pork: In a bowl, combine the orange juice, lime juice, minced garlic, oregano, cumin, black pepper, salt, and olive oil. Place the pork in a resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish, and pour the marinade over the pork. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  2. Roast the Pork: Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the marinated pork in a roasting pan, cover it with foil, and roast for about 3 to 4 hours, or until the pork is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork. Let the pork rest for 15 minutes before shredding or slicing.
  3. Assemble the Sandwiches: Slice the Cuban rolls in half. Spread a thin layer of mustard on the inside of each roll. Layer each sandwich with roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, and pickles.
  4. Grill the Sandwiches: Heat a griddle or a large skillet over medium heat. Butter the outside of each sandwich roll. Place the sandwiches on the griddle and press them down with a heavy skillet or a sandwich press. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted.
  5. Serve: Cut the sandwiches in half and serve them hot. Enjoy the authentic flavors of a Cuban Roasted Pork Sandwich!
