Traditionally served over mashed potatoes or egg noodles with a side of lingonberry jam, Swedish meatballs are a timeless favorite for cozy family dinners or special gatherings. This recipe is simple yet satisfying, offering that perfect balance of savory and comforting flavors in every bite.

Ingredients:

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter, for frying

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the breadcrumbs and milk and let sit for a few minutes until the breadcrumbs absorb the liquid. Add the ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the butter over medium heat. Fry the meatballs in batches, turning them to brown all sides, about 6-8 minutes total. Once browned and cooked through, transfer the meatballs to a plate and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt the butter for the sauce. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.
  5. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, stirring until smooth and thickened. Stir in the heavy cream and Dijon mustard, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the sauce for 5 minutes until heated through.
  7. Serve the Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes or egg noodles, and garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Enjoy these tender and flavorful Swedish meatballs with their creamy, savory gravy!
