Chochoyotes

Chochoyotes are traditional Mexican corn dough dumplings that are commonly used in soups, stews, or served as a side dish. These rustic dumplings, made from masa harina (corn flour), are simple yet rich in flavor, offering a satisfying texture that beautifully absorbs the flavors of the dish they accompany. They often have a small indentation in the center, which allows them to cook evenly and also helps them hold sauces or broths. Chochoyotes are a comforting addition to any meal, bringing a taste of traditional Mexican cuisine to your table.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder (optional, for fluffier dumplings)
  • 2 tablespoons lard or vegetable shortening
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh epazote or cilantro (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the masa harina and salt (and baking powder, if using). Gradually add the warm water while mixing with your hands until a soft dough forms. The dough should be moist but not sticky. Add the lard or vegetable shortening and mix until fully incorporated. If desired, add the chopped epazote or cilantro for added flavor.
  2. Shape the Chochoyotes:
Pinch off small pieces of dough, about the size of a walnut, and roll them into balls. Use your thumb to press a small indentation in the center of each ball. This will help the chochoyotes cook evenly and hold sauces or broths.
  3. Cook the Chochoyotes:
Bring a large pot of salted water or broth to a gentle boil. Drop the chochoyotes into the boiling liquid, making sure they don’t overcrowd the pot. Cook for about 8-10 minutes, or until they float to the surface and are fully cooked through. If adding them to a soup or stew, you can cook them directly in the dish for the last 10-15 minutes of cooking time.
  4. Serve:
Once cooked, drain the chochoyotes if necessary and serve them hot. They can be enjoyed on their own with a drizzle of salsa or added to soups and stews.

Chochoyotes are a versatile and delightful addition to many traditional Mexican dishes, adding a comforting, homemade touch to your meal.
