Butter Naan

Butter Naan is a soft, pillowy Indian flatbread that’s enriched with butter and perfect for scooping up curries, stews, or chutneys. This traditional bread is slightly charred from cooking in a hot pan, giving it a subtle smoky flavor and a chewy, tender texture. The addition of butter both in the dough and brushed on top makes the naan rich and flavorful. While typically cooked in a tandoor oven, this recipe allows you to make delicious naan right on your stovetop. Butter Naan is a versatile, comforting bread that elevates any meal with its warmth and flavor.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Add the yogurt, melted butter, and olive oil. Slowly mix in the warm milk and knead until a soft, smooth dough forms. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour. Cover and let the dough rest for 1 hour.
  2. Divide the dough: Once rested, divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball.
  3. Roll out the naan: On a floured surface, roll each dough ball into an oval or round shape, about 1/4-inch thick.
  4. Cook the naan: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place a rolled-out naan on the hot skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbles form on the surface. Flip the naan and cook for another 1-2 minutes until golden brown and slightly charred. Brush the cooked naan with melted butter.
  5. Serve: Repeat with the remaining dough balls. Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired and serve warm alongside your favorite curry or dish.

Butter Naan is the perfect complement to any Indian meal, with its soft, buttery texture and deliciously charred flavor!
