Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (optional)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
  2. Make the dough: Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until the dough comes together. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  3. Let the dough rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the breadsticks: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12-14 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6-8 inch long rope and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Second rise: Cover the breadsticks with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes until puffed.
  6. Preheat the oven: While the breadsticks are rising, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  7. Bake the breadsticks: Bake the breadsticks for 10-12 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
  8. Add flavor: After removing the breadsticks from the oven, immediately brush them with melted butter. If desired, mix the garlic powder and dried herbs into the melted butter before brushing. For an extra touch, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top.
  9. Serve: Serve the breadsticks warm with marinara sauce, garlic butter, or alongside your favorite meal.

These homemade Breadsticks are soft, flavorful, and perfect for any occasion, making them a delicious and easy addition to your meal!
