Apple Crisp Cups

Apple Crisp Cups are a delightful and portable twist on the classic apple crisp dessert. These individual servings are perfect for parties, gatherings, or even just a cozy night in. The buttery, cinnamon-scented apple filling is topped with a crunchy, golden oat streusel, all nestled in a crispy phyllo dough or wonton wrapper cup. They offer the comforting flavors of a traditional apple crisp with the added bonus of a perfectly portioned, hand-held treat. Serve them warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an irresistible dessert experience.

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or your favorite baking apple), peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 12 phyllo dough sheets or wonton wrappers
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the Streusel Topping:

  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, toss the diced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning. Add the granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch, mixing until the apples are evenly coated. Set aside.
  2. Make the Streusel Topping: In another bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Prepare the Phyllo Cups: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). If using phyllo dough, layer 2-3 sheets together, brushing each layer with melted butter. Cut the layered dough into squares large enough to fit into a muffin tin. Press each square into the muffin cups. If using wonton wrappers, simply press each wrapper into the muffin cups, then brush with melted butter.
  4. Assemble the Apple Crisp Cups: Spoon the apple filling into each prepared cup, filling them almost to the top. Sprinkle the streusel topping generously over the apples.
  5. Bake: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the phyllo or wonton wrappers are golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
  6. Serve: Let the apple crisp cups cool slightly before removing them from the muffin tin. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

These Apple Crisp Cups are the perfect combination of sweet, tart, and crunchy, making them an instant hit for any occasion!
