Air Fryer Tonkatsu

For a healthier twist on the classic Japanese tonkatsu, try this Air Fryer Tonkatsu recipe. Traditional tonkatsu, a breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet, is reimagined here with the air fryer to deliver the same crispy, golden exterior and tender, juicy interior with significantly less oil. The pork chops are seasoned, coated in a flavorful panko breadcrumb mixture, and air-fried to perfection. This method not only cuts down on the fat but also makes cleanup a breeze. Serve your air-fried tonkatsu with a side of shredded cabbage, steamed rice, and a drizzle of tonkatsu sauce for a delicious and balanced meal that’s perfect for any day of the week.

Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless pork chops (about 1 inch thick)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Cooking spray or a small amount of olive oil for spraying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Pork Chops: Pat the pork chops dry with paper towels. If needed, lightly pound them to an even thickness using a meat mallet. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.
  2. Set Up Breading Station: In a shallow dish, place the flour. In another shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and soy sauce. In a third shallow dish, combine the panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  3. Bread the Pork Chops: Dredge each pork chop in the flour, shaking off the excess. Dip into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off, then coat evenly with the panko mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  4. Air Fry: Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Arrange the breaded pork chops in the basket in a single layer, ensuring they do not overlap. Lightly spray the tops of the pork chops with additional cooking spray.
  5. Cook: Air fry the pork chops for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are golden brown and have an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C). Adjust cooking time as needed based on the thickness of the pork chops.
  6. Serve: Let the tonkatsu rest for a few minutes before serving. Pair with shredded cabbage, steamed rice, and a drizzle of tonkatsu sauce or your favorite dipping sauce for a complete meal.

This Air Fryer Tonkatsu offers a lighter take on a beloved classic, providing all the crispy, savory satisfaction with a fraction of the fat. Enjoy a guilt-free version of this Japanese favorite that’s both delicious and convenient!
