Chinese Boneless Spare Ribs

Chinese Boneless Spare Ribs are a popular dish in Chinese-American cuisine, known for their sweet and savory flavor, tender texture, and vibrant red color. These ribs are typically made from pork shoulder or country-style ribs, marinated in a delicious combination of hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, and Chinese five-spice powder. The marinade not only tenderizes the meat but also infuses it with a deep, rich flavor. Baked to perfection, the ribs develop a slightly caramelized glaze that makes them irresistibly sticky and flavorful. This dish is perfect as a main course or an appetizer and pairs wonderfully with steamed rice, vegetables, or a side of your favorite Chinese takeout classics.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds boneless pork ribs (country-style or pork shoulder)
  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a large bowl, mix together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, Chinese five-spice powder, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, ketchup, black pepper, and red food coloring (if using). Whisk until all the ingredients are well combined.
  2. Marinate the Pork: Add the boneless pork ribs to the marinade, ensuring that each piece is thoroughly coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the ribs and marinade to a resealable plastic bag. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to fully penetrate the meat.
  3. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top. Lightly oil the rack to prevent sticking.
  4. Bake the Ribs: Arrange the marinated ribs on the wire rack, reserving any remaining marinade. Bake the ribs in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  5. Glaze the Ribs: While the ribs are baking, pour the reserved marinade into a small saucepan. Add 1/4 cup of water and bring it to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for about 5 minutes until the marinade thickens slightly.
  6. Broil for a Caramelized Finish: After 25 minutes, remove the ribs from the oven and brush them generously with the thickened marinade. Increase the oven temperature to broil and return the ribs to the oven. Broil for an additional 5–7 minutes or until the ribs are caramelized and slightly charred at the edges. Keep a close eye on them to avoid burning.
  7. Serve: Remove the ribs from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes before slicing. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Enjoy with steamed rice and your favorite vegetables for a complete meal.
