Tomato-French Bread Lasagna Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf of French bread, sliced into 1-inch thick slices
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the French bread: Place the French bread slices on a baking sheet. Brush each slice with olive oil and sprinkle with minced garlic. Toast in the oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the bread is lightly golden and crisp.
  3. Cook the ground beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  4. Make the tomato sauce: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper into the skillet with the beef. Let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  5. Assemble the lasagna: Place a layer of toasted French bread slices at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread half of the ricotta cheese over the bread. Pour half of the meat sauce over the ricotta, then sprinkle with half of the shredded mozzarella. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
  6. Top with Parmesan cheese: Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the final layer of mozzarella.
  7. Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  8. Garnish and serve: Let the lasagna cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
