Chapati, a traditional Indian flatbread, is a staple in many households due to its simplicity, versatility, and nutritional benefits. Made with whole wheat flour, this unleavened bread is not only quick and easy to prepare but also packed with fiber and nutrients, making it a healthy addition to any meal. Whether you’re serving it with curry, using it as a wrap for grilled vegetables, or enjoying it with a simple spread of butter, chapati is the perfect complement to a wide range of dishes. This recipe provides a quick and easy method to make soft and fluffy chapatis at home.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
- 3/4 cup warm water (more if needed)
- 1 tablespoon oil or melted ghee (optional)
Instructions:
- Mix the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt. Gradually add warm water while mixing with your hands until a soft dough forms. If using, add the oil or melted ghee and knead it into the dough.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 15 minutes.
- Divide the Dough: After resting, divide the dough into small, equal-sized balls (about the size of a golf ball).
- Roll the Chapatis: On a floured surface, take one dough ball and flatten it slightly. Using a rolling pin, roll it out into a thin, round disc (about 6-8 inches in diameter). Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
- Cook the Chapatis: Heat a skillet or tawa over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the rolled-out chapati on the skillet. Cook for about 30 seconds or until you see bubbles forming on the surface. Flip the chapati and cook the other side for another 30 seconds. Flip it once more and press gently with a clean cloth or spatula to help it puff up. Cook until both sides have golden brown spots.
- Serve: Remove the chapati from the skillet and keep it warm by wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel. Repeat the process with the remaining dough. Serve warm with your favorite dishes.
